Landfill Gas Monitoring

At Terragen, our team of consultants has considerable experience of undertaking monitoring projects on a wide range of sites, from landfill sites to small residential developments. Our services can be called upon to undertake monitoring of established installations, or to include managing the installation of the boreholes.

Gas-monitoring programmes will vary from site to site, depending on the size of the site, the nature of the end use i.e. buildings or open space and the nature of the source of gas. There are a wide range of techniques available for the installation of gas monitoring wells, which can be installed, to various depths, be of varying diameters and collect gas from a range of response zones. The technique chosen and the design of the monitoring well will be dependent upon the sub-surface strata being investigated.

Monitoring primarily involves the use of portable equipment to carry out in-situ monitoring, although to resolve some more complex issues may require analysis of recovered samples.

In general the requirements for a monitoring programme are as follows:-

  • Gas readings are required over a period of approximately 3 months
  • The readings are to include several visits when the atmospheric pressure is falling and
    ideally below 1000mb
  • Gas flow rates are required to determine whether gas is being actively generated

Our standard gas monitoring service includes the collection of the following in-situ readings:-

  • Ambient Temperature
  • Barometric Pressure
  • Methane
  • Lower Explosive Limit (LEL)
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Oxygen
  • Hydrogen Sulphide
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Downhole Pressure
  • Flow Rate

If necessary, samples can be collected from the boreholes (via Gresham tube or tedlar bag for example) and submitted for laboratory analysis to validate the in-situ monitoring. This service can also be provided in conjunction with our groundwater monitoring service.
