Dust Monitoring

During a development it may become necessary to monitor dust emissions. TGEN can provide a comprehensive range of dust monitoring services to include the following:-

  • Daily site inspections to include a qualitative assessment of dust generating activities and the success of suppression measures.
  • Quantification of air dust quality via 24hour PM10 measurements
  • Dust deposition monitoring using frisbee passive dust monitors located at the site boundary. Monitoring is commonly undertaken at a range of locations around the site with stations positioned upwind and downwind of the nearest the dust generating activity in relation to any identified sensiotive targets. Monitoring is usually undertaken for one month on three occasions during dry months, typically from March to October. Samples are collected and analysed at a UKAS accredited laboratory. It is common practice to use a trigger threshold of 200mg/m2/day at the site boundary as an indicator of when nuisance is likely to be caused. This trigger threshold is in line with the thresholds when complaints are possible as set out in the Major of London and London Councils ‘The control of dust and emissions from construction and demolition: Best Practice Guidance’.
  • Dust deposition monitoring can be supplemented with a sticky pad gauge mounted on the frisbee to provide directional data

In the event that the trigger value is exceeded TGEN would undertake a full review of activities and areas of the site causing fugitive dust emissions and an assessment of the necessary controls. If required, the monitoring frequency would then be increased to weekly to demonstrate whether the controls are working.
